WASHINGTON 鈥� The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded a 2016-17 International Fellowship to Noura Bishay from Egypt. She is a Master鈥檚 degree student in Architecture at 91福利社.
AAUW International Fellows are selected for their academic achievement, scholarly promise, and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Thousands of AAUW International Fellows have returned to their home countries to become leaders in government, academia, community activism, business, and science.
Noura Bishay is an Egyptian architect who strives to encourage women in her field to focus on homeless people and slum area/informal settlements. She draws inspiration from Malala Yousafzai鈥檚 activism for the voiceless: 鈥淚 raise up my voice鈥攏ot so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard.鈥� Bishay has worked on spreading awareness to girls in her home country, and now she is pursuing her master鈥檚 degree in architecture.
For the 2016鈥�17 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million to more than 230 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls through six fellowships and grants programs. The first AAUW International Fellowship was awarded in 1917, making this one of the oldest and most prestigious fellowships in the United States.

A Different Approach to Preparing for a Career in Design
Design professions are changing rapidly. There are many new roles and career paths for architects and designers鈥攆rom innovation managers in large corporations to directors of energy management and designers of user experience鈥攁ll the way to traditional roles of creating designs for products and buildings.
Because of this, our goal at 91福利社 is not only to train students to succeed in a designer job, but also to prepare them to change with the profession over time. They need to know how to think and how to evolve in a career in design . I don鈥檛 want a client or employer to look at the work of our alumni and say that person graduated in the 鈥�80s, 鈥�90s or mid-teens. I want someone to look at their design portfolio and say 鈥渢hat person is a really good thinker.鈥�
Having a DesignMindTM is the foundation for that. Being agile and able to move with the profession鈥攏ot just the advances in technology but societal attitudes and the role of design in culture. That鈥檚 our challenge: To find the balance between training and career preparation and preparing students for lifelong learning.
One way we do that is through our faculty. At a typical design program, about 85 percent of the faculty is full time and they do 90 percent of their work inside the university setting. Only about 15 percent are practitioners. That ratio is reversed at NewSchool. Whether you want to learn how to become an interior designer or a construction manager, our faculty is made up mostly of current practitioners who work in product development, construction management, architecture, and other related fields. Our students have very immediate, hands-on relationships with people who are practicing what they teach.
Another way we do this is through the global influence on our degree programs. It is impossible not to be touched by the international design community, and designers must work cross-culturally. For example, one of the finalists to design the Obama library in Chicago is David Adjaye, who was born in Tanzania and has offices in London and New York.
We have a tremendous advantage in this regard because we are 12 miles from an international border and have strong design program and Global Design Degree with our sister school in Milan, Italy, . The Domus Academy School of Design at 91福利社 gives students access to a truly global classroom. In addition, through our vast network of study abroad opportunities, our students are able to view the world with an eye toward multiculturalism. Right now we have two exchange students from Madrid and 16 of our students are in Milan for the spring quarter. A global conversation is part of life at NewSchool.
What students learn from our degree programs here in San Diego and abroad, with our practitioner faculty and those in other parts of the world, will contribute to their DesignMind and their preparation for career success.

In the article, Elena expresses her viewpoints on her passion of design. 鈥淔or me, design is about envisioning what does not yet exist. In design, we must be visionary about the way we live, move, eat, and work. In order to do this, the design culture has to be a complementary mix of local, international, and global influences all at the same time. Ensuring we are exposing ourselves, as designers, to diversity allows us to observe the behaviors that encourage us to be innovative. We need to desire to see design as a culture and not just as profession, and to me, culture means recognizing the human being and how design can touch every human sense. Design is never without thinking about humans. It is an exciting time to be here in San Diego, as its design industry is reinventing itself and finding its place among the global design industry. This momentum is being fueled, in part, by Domus Academy.鈥�
Elena is currently focused on establishing and enhancing the Domus Academy School of Design at the 91福利社, centered around 鈥渓earning by designing,鈥� where students solve real-life design problems through collaborative projects. This living, urban laboratory combines world-renowned Italian design methodology along with the innovative style of California creativity.

Whether you鈥檙e looking to get your masters in construction management or degree in architecture, there are many factors that contribute to your decision about which school to attend: program selection, faculty expertise, internship options, accreditation, cost, location. I remember them well from when my daughter was choosing a college (even though that was more than a decade ago), and they are front of mind for me when I talk with prospective students and their families.
Once you鈥檝e sorted through those considerations, you need to visit the school. You need to touch it. You need to see if it feels right to you. You have to find the place that suits your personality. When I was visiting colleges with my daughter, I would turn her loose and stay in the background. I gave her the same advice that I give to all students thinking about studying architecture: In the studio, when the lights are out except for the one over your drafting table and everybody else is gone and you鈥檙e having a hard time solving your problem, that鈥檚 the moment in time when you have to say 鈥�I chose this school.鈥�
Our Open House on August 5 is a perfect chance to experience NewSchool that way. You鈥檒l get an interactive tour. You鈥檒l visit the studio space and materials lab. You鈥檒l speak with students about their experiences and see the work they鈥檝e created. And you鈥檒l get great advice about where to live and how to afford school.
You can also visit NewSchool for a personal tour, but we know that鈥檚 not possible for everyone鈥攅specially our international students. That鈥檚 why we recently created a virtual tour that combines 360-degree views, photos, videos, and narration from our online tour guides in English, Spanish, or Arabic. You can鈥檛 get any closer to NewSchool without actually being here. I wish other schools had this option when my daughter and I were driving across country visiting colleges.
Starting this fall, NewSchool is launching its Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure (IPAL) program, which provides students with the opportunity to graduate and obtain architecture licensure in an accelerated manner, saving time and money, while also obtaining a strong education and valuable, real-world experience.
Many architecture schools are so focused on history, theory and schematic design that they don鈥檛 get into the necessities of practice. They tend to gloss over them. Architectural media love to publish beautiful drawings and models, but they don鈥檛 talk about what it means to be an outstanding spec writer or cover a fuller picture of what it means to be an architect. Students can get a warped view of architectural practice.
Since the early 鈥�90s, I have been talking and writing about the drift away from professional preparation. Most recently, I discussed it as part of a panel at the 2016 American Institute of Architects (AIA) convention in Philadelphia.
As educators, we must bring internships and education together in the architectural curriculum. That is why I鈥檓 excited that 91福利社 is one of 14 architecture schools that are the first to participate in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) created by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, which regulates the licensing and credentialing of architects. We are also one of only two institutions in California to offer IPAL at the graduate level.
This integrated path places students in real-world situations through paid internships with our industry partners as part of the curriculum. It also allows them to take each of the six parts of the licensure exam while they are still in school with the goal that at graduation, they are licensed architects. Without it, the average age of a person who gets architectural licensure is 33.
This matters because licensure not only makes architects more employable more quickly, it gives them freedom to do more diverse and interesting work, moving from one firm to another, if they desire, with ease. It also decreases the cost of their education and allows them to work half- or full-time in paid internships, which helps them graduate with a firmer financial foundation.
At NewSchool, we already have a tradition of teaching our studios later in the day so students can work in the morning. We also have strong relationships with employers who can give us critical information about intern performance, which helps influence how and what we teach. The most important thing these additional real-world opportunities will give students is a more realistic and well-rounded understanding of鈥攁nd joy for鈥攚hat it means to be an architect. It also means they鈥檒l discover early on which part of the field they are most passionate about.
Maybe that鈥檚 not so revolutionary after all.
What do you think about the Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure?
SAN DIEGO 鈥� July 27, 2016 鈥� Hosted by the New Americans Museum located in Liberty Station, and students from 91福利社 and South Sudansese refugees living in City Heights are collaborating in a one-of-a-kind arts exhibition that is part of a global journey of an arts sculpture. TED Fellow and Israeli artist Raffael Lomas has brought his unique collaborative social art to San Diego, where he has partnered with groups who wouldn鈥檛 ordinarily come together.
Lomas collaborated with a group of NewSchool students, the Leichtag Foundation, many young South Sudanese refugees, and The Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), a nonprofit public policy hub based in San Diego dedicated to advancing the full economic and social inclusion of refugees. 鈥淎t 91福利社, we are committed to not only learning how we can help our local community, but we are also committed to collaborating with local organizations and groups to make a positive impact on communities, right here in southern California,鈥� said Chuck Crawford, faculty member at NewSchool. 鈥淭his unique project allowed us to use one of San Diego鈥檚 richest resources: its diversity.鈥�
The short documentary, 8000 Paper Clips and one Skype Call, by photographer and filmmaker Nitsan Tal, portrays the whole process of this project and will be featured for the first time at the New Americans Museum, a storytelling space that celebrates the contributions of all immigrants post WWII. 鈥淲e are delighted to offer our 鈥榟ome鈥� to this unforgettable collaborative installation that unites communities, students, and artists to foster deeper connections and mutual understanding鈥� concluded Linda Sotelo, Executive Director of the Museum.
The project, 8000 paper clips and on Skype call, created by Raffael Lomas and curated by Olga Sureda at the New Americans Museum, San Diego, will open on August 5, 2016 to the public and run through August 25, 2016. A preview reception will be held from 6-7:30pm on Thursday August 4th with the curator in attendance visiting from Spain.

The journey began in 2011 when a group of young South Sudanese refugees (some born in Israel) were deported from Israel when South Sudan declared its independence. TED Fellow and renowned Israeli artist Raffael Lomas came upon this unique situation that immediately inspired him to develop a project, when he also found out that Come True, an Israeli Organization, was providing personal sponsorship to the deported children, allowing them safe life and education in Uganda.
In his first trip to Uganda in 2014, Raffael Lomas met the student refugees, becoming aware immediately that deportation had a grave impact on the children with a loss of community and blurred their sense and understanding of a home. Together Raffael with the group of children created a unique art installation of a house made by 8000 paperclips. The foundation for the project was to create a method utilizing artistic and creative tools in order to bring about a social change. Yet, the goal was to have the piece be mobile friendly in order to rebuild it in Israel and skype the community they were forced to leave in Israel. On January 23rd 2015 at 10 am, a skype call was scheduled around the art installation house, between the refugees and their friends, sponsors, exteachers, and family, in Tel Aviv.
The art collaboration was a stepping stone which lead Raffael to travel again to Uganda (Jan 2016) to make a new collaboration happen: Lomas took a group of the Come True youth to Namatumba, a small town, where they volunteered with the community, helping to renovate the local school, teaching the Abuyudia Hebrew and basic Jewish concepts and engaging in other social activities. Through their knowledge and volunteering as teachers, they helped to bridge cultural gaps in epic proportions, an example that projects can evolve into a multi layer system with branches gasping for more light.
After returning from his second trip in Uganda, Raffael made contact with The Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), a nonprofit public policy hub based in San Diego (U.S) dedicated to advancing the full economic and social inclusion of refugees.
By developing a pluralized front in collaboration with NewSchool, in which a group of students have worked on the designing and building of the house鈥� doors, the Leichtag Foundation, the research and community organizing PANA and all of the working efforts of many young South Sudanese refugees, this exhibition at the New Americans Museum in San Diego will be presented with the aim to emphasize the barriers that have been broken during the project in its entirety. The short documentary 8000 Paper Clips and one Skype Call, by photographer and filmmaker Nitsan Tal, portrays the whole process of this project.
Art is a practical tool to be used to bring about social change. It bridges the gap between the human emotional experience and the force that drives one to act. Within this context, the exhibition will act as a multi-medium guide to express the story of the project and a glimpse into the life of a refugee. As a chapter comes to an end, the art installation 8000 paper clips will be auctioned off and all proceeds will return to the group of young refugees.
This project shines a powerful light and beckons the question of how one can bridge the gap between the art world with social activism. A cross multi-cultural and systems thinking approach proves just how great an impact an art project can make on humanity.

The final (fourth) year of the program will consist of a full-time practicum and final ARE tests.

San Diego CA, June 30, 2016 鈥� 91福利社 (NewSchool) hosted its 31st annual commencement ceremony Saturday, June 25 at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. The class of 2016 celebrated 128 students who completed or will complete their degree requirements from its Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, Interior Design, Construction Management and Digital Media Arts programs.
鈥淢y fellow graduates, we have learned a lot over the past 3 years,鈥� said Stephen Graham of Round Rock, Texas, Graduate Student Speaker and recipient of a Master of Architecture. 鈥淥ne of the hardest aspects of this program to get used to, was the criticism鈥� 3rd year is when we all grew into our own voices. We learned how to apply criticism, rather than combatting the tone or the manner in which it was given.鈥�
91福利社 also welcomed commencement speaker , the founding CEO of MobiTV, the world鈥檚 leading provider of live TV over mobile networks Program Manager at DARPA鈥檚 Biological Technologies Office and the founding Chairman of The Westminster Institute for Science Education, a 501C3 organization that helps K-12 schools extend STEM education placing emphasis on creativity and innovation. In addition to Graham and Dr. Alvelda, Harpreet Basi, of Sanger, California, spoke as the undergraduate speaker.

Henry Adams Medal and Certificate
The American Institute of Architects awards the prestigious Henry Adams Medal to the top-ranking graduating student in each National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited Architecture program. Evolved from the 鈥淒esigner of the Year鈥� award, the Outstanding Design Award is one of NewSchool鈥檚 oldest student awards. The award is unique as it focuses on design and is looked at as innovative or very accomplished. Any work associated with the award is looked to be of the highest possible visual and material quality. This year鈥檚 recipients are:

San Diego CA, June 25, 2016 鈥�91福利社 (NewSchool) will host its 31st annual commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. NewSchool will welcome commencement speaker Program >Manager at DARPA鈥檚 Biological Technologies Office and the founding Chairman of The Westminster Institute for Science Education, a 501C3 organization that helps K-12 schools extend STEM education placing emphasis on creativity and innovation. Prior to these roles, Dr. Alvelda was the founding CEO of MobiTV, the world鈥檚 leading provider of live TV over mobile networks and was a developer of spacecraft hardware and software systems and new computing architectures at NASA鈥檚 Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
In addition to Dr. Alvelda, the graduation program will feature undergraduate student speaker Harpreet Basi and graduate student speaker Stephen Graham. The class of 2016 will celebrate 128 students who have completed or will complete their degree requirements from its Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, Interior Design, Construction Management and Digital Media Arts programs.
鈥淗ere at NewSchool our graduates have experienced design education, which has led them to be guided toward a new way of seeing, thinking and understanding,鈥� said Marvin J. This evening during the university鈥檚 annual graduate student showcase, graduates and faculty members will be recognized with special commencement awards, prior to Saturday鈥檚 commencement ceremony. The following honors will be awarded:
Henry Adams Medal and Certificate
The American Institute of Architects awards the prestigious Henry Adams Medal to the top-ranking graduating student in each National Architectural Accrediting Board Architecture program. A Certificate of Merit is also awarded to the second-ranking graduating student recognizing their excellence in architecture.
Alpha Rho Chi Medal
