SAN DIEGO鈥擬arch 8, 2016鈥91福利社 (NewSchool) has announced that three of its students recently won prestigious ADDY awards, which are hosted by the San Diego marketing association SDX and were presented during the 2016 San Diego American Advertising Awards Gala.

Student Amjad Alotaibi won a Silver Addy in the Online/Interactive category for her six-second looping stop-motion animation Vine student spec ad for the anti-smoking campaign, Truth*; Marius De La Pe帽a, now an alumnus (鈥15), won a Bronze Addy in the Elements of Advertising category for his logo design for Toast Enoteca & Cucina; and Greg Rovelo won a Bronze Addy in the Elements of Advertising category for his logo design for Park Boulevard Catering.

鈥淲e鈥檙e very excited and proud to take home three ADDY awards this year,鈥 said Chris Clark, a faculty member in the Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool. 鈥淭his year鈥檚 win is very significant, as we have demonstrated clearly to the industry that we are a major player in this local design space and have very strong student work. I am very proud of our school and students. Our student work submissions demonstrated proficiency and excellence in brand identity, copywriting, photography, digital production, concepting, art direction, graphic design, creative direction (print and interactive), audio production, video production and animation.鈥

Last year NewSchool鈥檚 Armando Roman (鈥15) was awarded a Bronze ADDY in the student Elements of Advertising category for a logo he created as part of a branding and integrated advertising campaign project for an upscale East Village sushi restaurant, The Parlour.

According to a SDX news release, 鈥淪DX has been at the core of the creative community representing the best in San Diego advertising since it was founded in 1911,鈥 said Doug Hecht, Seed San Diego and current SDX president. 鈥淧resenting the San Diego American Advertising Awards showcases the high level of creative talent working in this town, and puts our best work in the national spotlight.鈥

91福利社 Student Team Takes First Place at the ASC Design/Build Competition in Reno

A NewSchool student team recently won first place at the region 7 that took place this past weekend. This is the third time in four years that a NewSchool team has taken first place, as well as the first time a NewSchool student who participated as an alternate in the competition took an award.

The University of Southern California took second and a team from the University of Washington placed third in the 2016 region 7 ASC Design/Build competition. The Annual Design/Build ASC Competition is widely regarded as one of the largest recruiting events in the construction management industry, with top employers in attendance.

SAN DIEGO鈥擣ebruary 11, 2016鈥Each year, thousands of video and table-top gaming enthusiasts gather for four exciting days of interactive gaming, art, music and more at , the premier gaming convention in San Diego for gamers, by gamers that takes place during San Diego Comic-Con International. In 2016, 91福利社 (NewSchool) is pleased to serve as the primary venue for Gam3rCon on July 21-24, 2016. The 7th annual convention, which celebrates game play and the gaming culture, highlights cutting-edge trends and technology in the digital gaming industry, and is an affordable, family-friendly event for gamers and industry professionals alike.

鈥淎long with all the exciting gaming opportunities available at the convention, Gam3rcon also offers a variety of art, music and live productions that highlight the vibrant aspects of the world of gaming,鈥 said Brendan MacNeil, Chief Operating Officer at Gam3rCon. 鈥淧articipants will have the chance to attend informative panel discussions and workshops that bring them up close and personal with the current cutting-edge activities in gaming, as well as get a sneak-peek into some innovations that are on the horizon in the industry. Many of those innovations are being designed and developed right in the center of Gam3rCon at the Media Design School of Digital Arts at 91福利社 through their relationship with industry-recognized and awarded Media Design School in New Zealand.鈥

Gam3rCon is committed to supporting the gaming community in an active and meaningful way by bringing developers and gamers together on a regular basis at their monthly 鈥淕am3 Days鈥 throughout the year, several of which have also been hosted at NewSchool.

In conjunction with serving as host for the 2016 convention, NewSchool and Gam3rCon will be jointly launching a scholarship for students who are interested in studying game development. The university boasts the Media Design School of Digital Arts, a unique collaboration between 91福利社 and the industry-wide recognized Media Design School in Auckland, New Zealand, which is ranked by Autodesk CG Student Awards to be among the top three schools in the world to provide VFX/Animation and Game Development qualifications. The unique digital art school brings a global perspective to digital arts degree programs including game development, game programming, animation and media design.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 fantastic that the 7th annual Gam3rCon is being hosted at the NewSchool campus,鈥 said George Rothrock, a contributing faculty member in the Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool. 鈥淕am3rCon presents a wonderful connection between the public and the expression of gamer and geek culture. SAN DIEGO, Calif., and MILAN 鈥擩anuary 26, 2016鈥The Domus Academy School of Design at 91福利社 (NewSchool), in collaboration with globally-acclaimed , in Milan, Italy, have jointly announced the launch of two Global Design Degrees. The degree will allow students the opportunity to spend two years studying in San Diego, a rising contemporary and creative location for design in Southern California, and up to two years studying in Milan, Italy, the world capital of design. Upon graduation, students will earn two design credentials: a bachelor鈥檚 degree from a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)-accredited institution, 91福利社 in San Diego, through its Domus Academy School of Design, as well as a diploma from Domus Academy in Milan. In addition, students will have had one unforgettable experience that combines the best of Italian design blended with the California innovative creative industry. The Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool is now accepting applications for fall 2016 for a Bachelor of Interior Architecture & Design or a Bachelor of Arts in Product Design.

Students have worked directly with renowned companies such as BMW Design Group, Crea International, Sound United, Elica, Fiat, Swenyo, Frog Design, FutureBrand, La Triennale di Milano, Matteo Thun & Partners, Pambianco, RCS Media Group, Studio Urquiola, Co-merge, and Whirlpool.

The two universities also collaborate for a San Diego-based Italian design experience through the Domus Academy School of Design at 91福利社, a partnership with Domus Academy in Milan. The San Diego program offers three immersive hands-on degrees on its California-based campus that also bring in world-renowned faculty from Milan and focus on human-centric design philosophy and project-based learning through real life projects and clients.

Beginning in 2016, all Game Development students at NewSchool will receive free membership to the International Game Development Association (IGDA).

Students will be able to attend local IGDA chapter events for networking opportunities as well as receive discounts to many major industry events around the world. Event discounts for 2015 included GDC events, Cloud Gaming, D.I.C.E, IndieCade and Power Play. Students will also receive discounts on several game development books and software through select retailers as well as have the opportunity to have their work highlighted on IGDA鈥檚 Indiegogo curated projects page.

Animation Career Review Names MDS in New Zealand a Top 20 ‘International Animation School’

Media Design School (MDS) in Auckland, New Zealand 鈥 with which NewSchool collaborates for its Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool 鈥 has recently been ranked 15th on Animation Career Review鈥榮 annual list of . In 2014, Media Design School made its debut on the list, at No. 19.

Since 2012, NewSchool and MDS have collaborated on the Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool, bringing curriculum and faculty from the Asia-Pacific region to work with students in San Diego. The Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool enables students to gain a global perspective on digital arts degree programs such as game development, game programming, animation and media design. On the Auckland-based campus, MDS offers specialist degrees in emerging creative industries, with alumni who are working with world-renowned companies such as DreamWorks, Pixar, BBDO Worldwide, and Saatchi & Saatchi, as well as working on blockbuster movies such as The Hobbit, Avatar, King Kong and films from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. These industry connections, faculty expertise and student experiences are also transferred to NewSchool students.

The Animation Career Review Top 100 International Animation Schools list is the most comprehensive source of information for aspiring animation and game design professionals, takes four key criteria into consideration when determining a school鈥檚 ranking. Malecha, FAIA, has been named President and Chief Academic Officer, effective Jan. 1, 2016. Malecha, who most recently served as the Dean of the College of Design and Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University, has more than 40 years of experience in academic leadership, architecture and global design education. Since 2010, he served as an important member of the NewSchool Board of Directors.

鈥淧resident Marvin Malecha has long been an advocate of 91福利社, and as a Board member, he has been deeply committed to our mission and the success of our students, faculty, and alumni,鈥 said Vivian Sanchez, Interim President and Chair, NewSchool Board of Directors. 鈥淎s a highly awarded architect and educational leader, President Malecha鈥檚 proven transformational leadership has instilled our confidence in his ability to guide NewSchool as we fulfill our ambitious plans for innovation in global design education and continued academic excellence. Malecha served as the Dean of the College of Design for North Carolina State from 1994 until December 2015, and for 12 years prior, was Dean of the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

鈥淚 am eager to join 91福利社 in this leadership capacity and look forward to fostering an environment where design-thinking is considered essential language of the creative discipline,鈥 said President Marvin Malecha. 鈥淎s an intimate, tight-knit university community, I鈥檝e witnessed how NewSchool has a certain agility, which is critical during a time when design and innovation are all about agility. Malecha is a highly awarded architect, thought leader and academic innovator, and has received the Excellence in Education Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), California Council and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards鈥 Prize for Creative Integration of Practice and Education in the Academy. Malecha was ranked second nationally in 2005 for his influence on practice among architectural educators in the U.S. by Design Intelligence magazine and in 2006 the magazine named him Architectural Educator of the Year.

He is the only American educator to have been recognized as an honorary member of the European Association for Architectural Education and was also named Distinguished Professor by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2002 for creative achievement in the advancement of architectural education through teaching, design scholarship, research or service. He received the prestigious 2003 Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education from the AIA and ACSA and, in 2006, was inducted into Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.

As an educator, Malecha has devoted considerable energy to international studies and integrating a global view in architectural and design academic programs. He has conducted seminars and lectures at universities abroad including in Belgium, Chile, Italy, Japan, Korea, Romania, and Spain, and recently conducted lectures and seminars in Antwerp, Belgium and Santiago, Chile, as well as in Bucharest, Romania, where he was presented with an honorary degree, the Professor Honoris Causa. Malecha founded a bi-annual conference between the Architecture Research Centers Consortium and the European Association of Architectural Educators (EAAE). He was recognized as the 1980 Rotch Traveling Scholar, a prestigious honor, established in 1883 and bestowed annually to a top scholar, allowing them to travel the world, documenting the experience in images, drawings and text. In addition to Malecha, the roster of Rotch Scholars includes many of the country鈥檚 most distinguished architects.

Malecha earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University. He has served on the National Architectural Accrediting Board, is a member of the California Council of Architectural Education, a Fellow in the AIA and has served as President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Malecha also previously served as the Vice Chair of the AIA/ACSA Council on Architectural Research and as First President/President Elect (2008-2009) of the AIA. He also served AIA as the National President in 2009. Malecha is a published author, and his most recent book, (Kendall Hunt Publishing, 2015), published this past June.

鈥淚 am excited and energized for the future of both NewSchool and of design education,鈥 said Malecha. 鈥淚t鈥檚 one of my goals to promote that design is a continuum, and we as educators are setting students on the path to be always learning and always innovating.鈥
